NCC SEN: Consultation on future of centralised teaching
support services

NCC have just published a consultation on proposed changes to centralised support services for children and young people with special educational needs.

The consultation runs until 31st March 2012. Full details of the proposals and how to submit comments are in the document above.

Sitting Service for Disabled Children

Do you have a disabled child? Would you like to go out in the evening in the knowledge
that all their needs will be met in your absence? A Specialist Sitter will be able to help!
Specialist Sitters are qualified, experienced Ofsted registered childminders who, as part of Northamptonshire's Childminding Network, offer an evening service on weekdays and weekends.
This service is managed by Northamptonshire Childminding Association (NCA).

Saturday and Holiday clubs for disabled young people

This activity is being run for young people aged between 13 and 17,
by Papworth Trust every Saturday and during half-term.

Cost is: £5 - half-day Saturday session, £10- full day during half-term.

www.Netbuddy.org.uk is an information-sharing website for people supporting children and adults with learning disabilities. The site offers hundreds of practical tips and ideas on everything from managing challenging behaviour to useful learning apps for iPods. All the tips are contributed by people with first-hand experience of learning disability, and are organised into easy-to-find sections, such as:- Education, Behaviour and Communication.

Skill finds new home at Disability Alliance

The disability charity Skill: National Bureau for Disabled Students closed in April 2011 [1]. Skill was the only organisation providing advice and information to disabled people who wanted to gain new skills or go into further and higher education. The closure of Skill left a massive gap for disabled people. Disability Alliance has been supported by the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills to fill part of the gap. Disability Alliance is very pleased to announce it will be delivering some of the critical services Skill previously provided.

16 - 19 Bursaries

From September 2011, young people who need some financial support to help them stay in education or training after 16 can apply to their school, college or training provider for the new 16-19 Bursary Fund. Those most in need will be eligible for a bursary of 1200 pounds a year. This includes young people in care, care leavers, young people receiving income support and disabled young people receiving both Employment Support Allowance and Disability Living Allowance.

IPSEA's Survey on SEN provision in Academies

More and more parents are asking IPSEA about SEN provision in Academies - and some common issues are emerging. IPSEA has launched a simple survey to gather feedback on this issue. Please encourage anyone whose child with SEN attends (or will attend) an Academy to share their experience with us via this survey. We will use the data to develop resources and strengthen our lobbying.

ADDS UP! provides comprehensive training for parents and professionals who would like
a better understanding of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and conditions
commonly associated with it. These include a range of Autism Spectrum disorders and
include Oppositional Defiance Disorder(ODD – sometimes referred to as Conduct Disorder)
depression and other complex mental health issues.

DSUK is a people-centred organisation with a unique sense of

A support group for families of children with Autistic Spectrum disorder and Aspergers

Caroline Moore, e-Safety Officer for the Local Safeguarding Children Board, Northamptonshire, will talk about keeping your child safe on line and the things to look out for if your child is a victim of cyber bullying or is using the computer inappropriately.

Tracy and Julia from Autism Concern will also be speaking about e-safety from an Aspergers/Autistic perspective and will introduce Autism Concern’s on line Parent E-Saftey course

Transforming Transitions

Northamptonshire is investing in developing a new multi-agency transitions
service for young people 14-25 with learning disabilities/difficulties.
The project to establish a multi agency team is to be re launched in February 2012.

An important part of the project will be the full involvement of young people 14-25 with learning disabilities/difficulties and parents and family carers and we are therefore pulling together a group who will be able to oversee and challenge the work of the project.

We are looking for young people, family carers and services supporting young people and carers to form a challenge group.
Members can be involved in many ways from attending Challenge Group meetings, giving your views outside of meetings, or joining groups who are working on one area of work such as training.
